Weight Loss
Semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy) is an FDA-approved injectable prescription weight loss medication that is taken once a week. It is considered to be one of the most effective weight loss prescriptions currently available. Semaglutide is the active ingredient in several brand name GLP-1 medications, including Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Wegovy. Research has shown that Semaglutide is more effective in helping patients lose weight compared to other medications. At Transitions Medspa, our physicians carefully monitor patients and make individualized adjustments to reach the target dose for optimal results. This process involves slowly increasing the dose over time and should only be done under the supervision of a licensed physician. Originally approved to treat Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Semaglutide is now also used for weight management and is administered once weekly through a simple subcutaneous injection.
Tirzepatide (Mounjaro / Zepbound) and Ozempic's semaglutide both belong to a class of drugs known as incretin mimetics, but they have some differences. Mounjaro acts on both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, while Semaglutide only acts on GLP-1 receptors. Tirzepatide activates glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptors, making it the most effective weight loss medication currently available.
